PRAYING

With Christ in the School of Prayer

Day 25 – The Holy Spirit and Prayer

“On that day, you won’t need to ask me anything. Truly, I tell you, whatever you ask the Father in my name, He will give you. Up to now, you haven’t asked for anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete. On that day, you will ask in my name; and I’m not saying that I will ask the Father for you, because the Father Himself loves you.” – John 16:23-26.

“Pray in the Holy Spirit, and keep yourselves in God’s love.” – Jude 20-21.

John’s words in 1 John 2:12-14 speak to different stages in the Christian journey, much like the various phases we encounter in life. The first stage is akin to spiritual infancy, where new believers bask in the newfound joy of forgiveness. As young believers mature, they enter a phase of struggle and growth, a spiritual adolescence marked by battles and victories, underpinned by a deepening understanding of God’s Word. In the final stage, believers, now spiritual parents, immerse themselves in profound communion with God, basking in the depths of His wisdom and knowledge.

In Christ’s teachings on prayer, we observe a parallel progression. The Sermon on the Mount introduces the foundational concept of God as “Father,” emphasizing a childlike trust and assurance in His providential care. This phase of prayer is characterized by simplicity and faith.

The subsequent stage reflects a time of conflict and spiritual warfare. Here, Jesus speaks of the necessity of persistent prayer and fasting, underscoring a deeper engagement in spiritual matters. This phase demands a committed, active faith.

In His final teachings, Christ introduces a mature stage of spiritual understanding. Here, the believers, now seen as friends of Christ, are entrusted with the profound privilege of asking anything in His name. This marks the culmination of spiritual maturity in prayer, where the faithful are granted access to the boundless resources of God’s kingdom.

The distinction between these stages becomes particularly poignant in Jesus’ assurance: “Up until now, you have not asked for anything in my Name.” Christ’s sacrifice, resurrection, and ascension culminate in the Holy Spirit’s indwelling, ushering in a transformative power in prayer. Praying in Jesus’ name now embodies a tangible manifestation of the Spirit’s presence within believers.

Understanding the Holy Spirit’s role in prayer necessitates recognizing His unique arrival post-Christ’s glorification. The effects of the Holy Spirit, as the Spirit of the glorified Jesus, differ significantly from His Old Testament presence. Now, the Spirit brings the full impact of Christ’s redemptive work into the believer’s life, linking us directly to Christ’s eternal intercession.

This profound unity with Christ through the Holy Spirit elevates prayer to a new dimension. Our prayers, infused with the Spirit’s power, become extensions of Christ’s own intercessory work. As believers, our deepest desires align with God’s will, making our petitions powerful and effective.

Word in Action

Earnestly seek the fullness of the Holy Spirit. Embracing the Spirit’s presence in all aspects of life allows us to truly pray in Jesus’ name, not as a mere formula, but as a living reality of our unity with Him. This leads to an intimate, powerful prayer life that aligns with God’s will and purposes.

Wonder in the Word
