PRAYING

With Christ in the School of Prayer

Day 19 – Power for Praying and Working

“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to the Father. And whatever you ask in my name, I will do.” – John 14:12-13.

In the journey of faith, there lies both a mystery and a promise – the power to achieve greater works than Jesus did, rooted in the practice of prayer. This promise, as presented by Jesus in John 14:12-13, is not merely a lofty ideal, but a tangible reality for those who believe in Him and pray in His name.

Jesus’ ministry, encapsulated in His teachings, miracles, and ultimately His sacrifice, sets a foundation for us, His followers. But what is astonishing is His assurance that His ascension to the Father would not mark the end of His works but the beginning of even greater works performed through us. This promise hinges on two pivotal truths: the power Jesus received from the Father upon His ascension, and the profound efficacy of praying in His name.

Prayer in Jesus’ name is not a ritualistic formula, but an alignment with His character, will, and purposes. It signifies a deep, faith-filled relationship with Him and a commitment to His mission. As we engage in this form of prayer, we tap into the divine power that Jesus received from the Father. This power is not just for miraculous signs but extends to broader realms of spiritual impact and kingdom advancement.

The early church exemplifies this promise. Post-ascension, figures like Peter and Paul, through faith and prayer, accomplished visibly greater things than what was witnessed during Jesus’ physical ministry. This wasn’t due to their personal capabilities but because Jesus worked through them, showcasing His power in new and profound ways.

For us today, the call is no different. We are urged to embrace this divine commission with humility and boldness. Our role is to remain in Christ, believe in Him, and be responsive to the Holy Spirit. As we align our prayers with His will and engage in His works, we become conduits of His power and love in this world.

To live out this calling effectively, our focus should be on cultivating a deep faith in Jesus and engaging in earnest, faith-filled prayer in His name. Real spiritual effectiveness, the kind that aligns with Jesus’ promise of greater works, requires this foundation of steadfast belief and prayer.

However, this promise of power for praying and working is often met with challenges. The key to overcoming these challenges lies in understanding the reciprocal relationship between prayer and work. As we engage in God’s work, we are drawn into deeper prayer, and as our prayer life deepens, we are empowered for greater works. This cycle of growth in faithful service and fervent prayer is essential for realizing the potential of Jesus’ promise.

Word in Action

Dedicate yourself to both prayer and action. Engage in prayer that aligns with Christ’s character and purposes, and let this prayer fuel your actions in His service. Remember, your effectiveness in God’s work is directly proportional to the depth of your prayer life.
