Standing Firm in Fearful Times

In God, Whose Word I Praise

Sep 14, 2023

“In God, whose word I praise— in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” (Psalm 56:4, NIV)

When we face circumstances that are beyond our control, fear can be a natural response. Yet, the psalmist provides us with a striking alternative: confidence in God that leads to a fearless approach to life.

This Psalm, traditionally believed to have been written by David when the Philistines captured him in Gath, reflects a bold and courageous faith in the face of danger and uncertainty. Despite his precarious situation, David’s trust is firmly placed in God, leading him to boldly declare, “I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”

At the core of David’s courage and fearlessness is his trust in God and His word. Trusting in God is more than just believing He exists. It’s putting our confidence in His character, promises, and His Word. It is resting in His ability to handle any situation, no matter how seemingly overwhelming.

The psalmist also takes comfort in praising the Word of God. It’s a practice that reaffirms God’s promises, his sovereignty, and his goodness, which reinforces our faith and trust in Him. It serves as a constant reminder that God’s Word is sure, powerful, and trustworthy.

The world may seem filled with giants like the Philistines, forces and circumstances that may intimidate us. Yet, if we truly trust in God and His Word, we have no reason to fear. We can approach life with a God-given boldness and courage, knowing that His perfect love casts out all fear.
