Standing Firm in Fearful Times

Praying Amidst the Trembling Earth

Sep 13, 2023

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.” (Psalm 46:1-2, NIV)

The imagery in these verses is gripping. The earth giving way, mountains falling into the sea – it paints a picture of utmost chaos, uncertainty, and fear. It is in this dire context that the psalmist proclaims with unshakeable confidence: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

How is such audacious faith possible in the midst of chaos and uncertainty? The key lies in the posture of prayer.

Today’s devotional brings our attention to the role of prayer in confronting fear and anxiety. While we may not be faced with the literal disintegration of the earth, there are times when our personal worlds feel as if they’re collapsing. During these moments, our instinct might be to panic, worry or despair. However, we are encouraged to adopt a different response – prayer.

Prayer is a potent force in times of distress. It realigns our perspective, reminding us of God’s unchanging character amidst changing circumstances. It reinforces the truth that He is our refuge – a place of safety and protection. It attests to the fact that He is our strength – our resource for courage and endurance. Above all, prayer establishes an intimate dialogue with God, allowing us to experience His ever-present help in real and tangible ways.

When the mountains of our lives seem to crumble, when the ground beneath us appears to give way, let us lean into prayer. Let us remember and declare that God is our refuge and strength. He is not far away but ever-present, ready to help us.

Prayer allows us to echo the psalmist’s conviction, “We will not fear”. This is not a denial of reality, but a bold affirmation of faith in God’s power and steadfast love.
