“So then, banish anxiety from your heart and cast off the troubles of your body, for youth and vigor are meaningless.” (Ecclesiastes 11:10, NIV)
The wisdom of Ecclesiastes, often clothed in stark realism, provides us with profound insights about life. The scripture for today, too, packs a punch. It encourages us to discard anxiety from our hearts and release the troubles of our bodies, as they essentially render the vigor and vitality of life meaningless.
It’s easy to get caught up in worries and anxieties about the future. We stress over things that may never happen, and in the process, rob ourselves of the joy of the present moment. This scripture is a stark reminder to us: there’s no merit in surrendering our present joy to a future that’s not promised.
Instead, we are called to live fully in the present, embracing every moment, every experience with gratitude and openness. This doesn’t mean we should be reckless or irresponsible about the future. But instead of being paralyzed by anxiety, we should use our understanding of the future to inform our decisions and actions today, without losing the joy of the present moment.
Jesus is the Lord of our past, present, and future. His presence spans across all time, and He desires for us to live with the assurance of His guidance and care. When we lean into this truth, we realize there’s no room for anxiety. Instead, there’s an overwhelming sense of peace and joy that comes from trusting God and living in the present moment.
The vigor of youth, or indeed life, is to be celebrated, not squandered away in worry. Each day brings its unique blessings and opportunities. So, let us step into each new day, banishing anxiety from our hearts, living in joyful anticipation of the good that the Lord has prepared for us.
